This data set was developed for use within WFDSS to identify and display National Recreation Areas (NRA) managed by the USDA Forest Service.
The National Recreation Areas (NRA) data displayed in WFDSS were obtained from the PAD-US (Protected Areas Database - US), version 3.0. No edits were made to the geometry or geography of these data. However, the attribution was converted to the WFDSS data standard to ensure that they matched our existing data structure inside the application. The integrity of the data was not compromised in this conversion and these data still accurately represent the National Recreation Areas data that are in PAD-US 3.0.
Caution: The data displayed in WFDSS are intended for STRATEGIC USE ONLY. Always verify the positional accuracy of the data with local knowledge.

Important Note: USGS released a revised version of PAD-US 3.0 on March 20, 2023. This revised product is formally known as PAD-US 3.0 Ver 2.0. WFDSS does not currently include data from this revised product. WFDSS does include data from PADS-US 3.0 Ver 1.0 released on 07/05/22.
The WFDSS application is "data rich". It requires data which is spatially oriented and graphically displays information to support wildland fire and other natural resource decisions. In April 2009 an interagency GIS team was formed to provide data support for WFDSS. This team is responsible for acquiring, consolidating, and validating their agency spatial and tabular data. In addition this team develops and maintains communications among local, regional, and national agency personnel to improve the collection process and provide explicit guidance on data needs. The members of the WFDSS GIS team are:
