Overview

The National Park Service (NPS) Buildings layer in WFDSS depicts all NPS facilities that have not been removed or destroyed. A facility is defined by the NPS as an asset that the NPS desires to track and manage as a distinct identifiable entity. In the case of wildland fire risk assessments, a facility is most often a structure but in special instances, a park unit may wish to identify and assess other at-risk features such as a historic wooden bridge or an interpretive display.

Data Input

Caution: The data displayed in WFDSS are intended for STRATEGIC USE ONLY. Always verify the positional accuracy of the data with local knowledge

The NPS Buildings data displayed in WFDSS were obtained from the NPS Wildfire Risk Assessment v2023 Feature Service. This feature service incorporates facilities data from a variety of sources including the NPS Buildings Enterprise Dataset, WFDSS, and NPMap. It also includes facilities data from GIS digitization and GPS data collection efforts.

The NPS Wildfire Risk Assessment Feature Service was developed using a consistent survey methodology to create a complete inventory of facilities within NPS unit boundaries. Before importing a copy of this data into WFDSS, the WFM RD&A Data Team applied data cleansing techniques to standardize null values. Additionally, facilities without a spatial component or with a Facility_Type equal to removed or destroyed were excluded from the data pull. The integrity of the data was not compromised in this conversion, and these data still accurately represent the facilities present in NPS Wildfire Risk Assessment database.

WFDSS GIS Team

The WFDSS application is "data rich". It requires data which is spatially oriented and graphically displays information to support wildland fire and other natural resource decisions. In April 2009 an interagency GIS team was formed to provide data support for WFDSS. This team is responsible for acquiring, consolidating, and validating their agency spatial and tabular data. In addition this team develops and maintains communications among local, regional, and national agency personnel to improve the collection process and provide explicit guidance on data needs. The members of the WFDSS GIS Team are:
