Overview

This dataset contains polygons of Horse and Burro Herd Management Areas. Federal lands identified in the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act 1971 but not managed for wild horses and burros are called Herd Areas. Herd Areas were carried forward in land use plans and determinations were made as to whether or not to manage animals on these federal lands. Federal lands identified in 1971 but managed for wild horses and burros are called Herd Management Areas. In Herd Management Areas, specific laws and regulations pertaining to the management of wild horses and burros are applied. The Bureau uses the term Herd Management Area; the Forest Service uses the term Wild Horse Territory. All Herd Management Areas need to be contained within an originally designated Herd Area. Management status can change based on changing conditions.

WFDSS GIS Team

The WFDSS application is "data rich". It requires data which is spatially oriented and graphically displays information to support wildland fire and other natural resource decisions. In April 2009 an interagency GIS Team was formed to provide data support for WFDSS. This team is responsible for acquiring, consolidating, and validating their agency spatial and tabular data. In addition this team develops and maintains communications among local, regional, and national agency personnel to improve the collection process and provide explicit guidance on data needs. The members of the WFDSS GIS team are:
