The National FMU layer is being developed by the WFDSS GIS Team in an effort to provide a query-able interagency FMU layer in the Wildland Fire Decision Support System (WFDSS). The layer spatially represents the areas outlined in the Land/Resource Management Plans (LRMP) or in the Fire Management Plans of the local agency field unit.
This data set is a compilation of FMU data provided by individual field units of the Bureau of indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the USDA Forest Service. The data must follow the pre-established data standard, which can be found at https://wfdss.usgs.gov/wfdss/pdfs/Geospatial_data_stnd.pdf. To provide continuity between the data submitted by each agency/unit and this final data set, no topological analysis or editing of the polygons was performed. Polygons were converted from multipart to singlepart due to increase performance with querying and analysis of the data in the ArcGIS Server environment.
No warranty is made by the Wildland Fire Decision Support System (WFDSS) GIS Team for use of these data for purposes not intended by WFDSS. Additionally, no warranty is made by the WFDSS Team as to the accuracy, reliability, or completeness of these data for individual use or aggregate use with other data.
When analyzing the submitted layers, it is apparent that some confusion exists between the FMUs being used in WFDSS and the FMUs being used in FPA. Only rarely are these FMU boundaries the same.
In all cases, the FMUs that must be used in WFDSS are those that are outlined in the Land/Resource Management Plan (LRMP) or Fire Management Plan.

The WFDSS application is "data rich". It requires data which is spatially oriented and graphically displays information to support wildland fire and other natural resource decisions. Due to the type and number of interagency spatial data sets required in April 2009 an interagency GIS Team was formed to provide data support for WFDSS. This Team is responsible for acquiring, consolidating, and validating their agency spatial and tabular data. In addition this team developed and maintained communications among local, regional, and national agency personnel to improve the collection process and provide explicit guidance on data needs. The members of the WFDSS GIS Team are:
