Oil and Gas Wells

Oil and Gas Wells Overview

This dataset represents Oil and Natural Gas Wells. An Oil and Natural Gas Well is a hole drilled in the earth for the purpose of finding or producing crude oil or natural gas; or producing services related to the production of crude or natural gas.

Some states do have wells for underground Natural Gas storage facilities, where these have been identified they were included. This layer is derived from well data from individual states and United States Agencies. Oil and gas exploration in Texas takes advantage of drilling technology to use a single surface well drilling location to drill multiple bottom hole well connections to extract oil and gas. The addition of Well data from Texas results in the addition of a related table to support this one surface well to many bottom hole connections. This related table provides records for Wells that have more than one bottom hole linked to the surface well.

Oil and Gas Wells Disclaimer

Data is complete as of the most recent date indicated in the Time Period section. All efforts were taken to identify Oil and Natural Gas Wells through open sources. Additional facilities may exist. Primary source is derived from well data from individual states and provinces and United States Agencies.

Data were extracted from sources (identified in the SOURCE field) and other open-source websites to populate the attribute fields. For string and data types, NOT AVAILABLE values denote missing data that was not present in the source data while NOT APPLICABLE values denote that the field does not apply for the specific case. For numeric data types, -999 denotes missing data that was within the expected ranges or had expected/valid values. Text attribute values were checked for spelling and usage consistency. No topology tests were conducted. All records were verified to occur within the spatial domain of the feature class/shapefile.

The physical accuracy of each feature is qualified in the POSREL (Positional Reliability) Field. All features were given one of six values: WITHIN 40 FEET, WITHIN 166 FEET, WITHIN 1 MILE, EXCEEDS 1 MILE, NOTIONAL, or THIRD PARTY. Definitions for Positional Reliability field values can be found in the POSREL attribute information.

WFDSS GIS Team

The WFDSS application is "data rich". It requires data which is spatially oriented and graphically displays information to support wildland fire and other natural resource decisions. Due to the type and number of interagency spatial data sets required in April 2009 an interagency GIS Team was formed to provide data support for WFDSS. This Team is responsible for acquiring, consolidating, and validating their agency spatial and tabular data. In addition this team developed and maintained communications among local, regional, and national agency personnel to improve the collection process and provide explicit guidance on data needs. The members of the WFDSS GIS Team are:
