Modifying Wind Information (BFB, STFB)
When setting up BFB or STFB, you can adjust the wind conditions by changing the following parameters (For FSPro, see Modifying FSPro Winds):
- Speed: For analyses based on future date/time, National Weather Service (NWS) Forecast Data is generated and automatically displayed in the Speed field. For analyses based on a previous date (up to 17 months in the past), historic weather data from the RAWS appears in the field. You can keep these values or change them as needed.
- Direction: For analyses based on future date/time, National Weather Service (NWS) Forecast Data is generated and automatically displayed in the Speed box. For analyses based on a previous date (up to 17 months in the past), historic weather data from the RAWS appears in the box. You can keep these values or change them as needed.
- Wind Type: Accept the defaults or enter a wind speed and direction.
- Generate Gridded Winds: The model uses the inputs and the terrain to generate gridded winds across the landscape for use in the fire behavior calculations. Examples include 'ridgetop winds will be stronger than valley bottom winds', 'winds in saddles will increase', 'winds on the lee side of mountains will decrease'.
- Static Direction: The values for speed and direction are used for the entire landscape, regardless of terrain.
- Wind Blowing Uphill: Accept the default or enter the wind speed that the model should use for uphill winds.
- Wind Blowing Downhill: Accept the default or enter the wind speed that the model should use for downhill winds.
Note: If you select gridded winds, you must indicate a wind direction (in degrees). Gridded winds use the resolution specified for the landscape.
To modify wind information:
- Navigate to the analysis that contains the wind information you want to modify by doing one of the following steps:
- Choose tab > select the analysis > click View Information.
- If you are already in the analysis, select the menu option from the list on the left.
The General Information page appears for the selected analysis.
- Scroll down to the Wind Information section and, if necessary, click the down arrow to display the Wind Information.
- Verify the Speed and Direction and modify if necessary. The page refreshes after each entry.
- Select the Wind Type. The page refreshes.
- Click Save.
You can continue to modify analysis parameters until the analysis is run.
